The mainstream
press whether print or broadcast media only tells one side of the story about
guns and those who use them. The other side of the story should be told as well
for the criminal is not the only ones who use guns but guns are also used to
protect oneself and others as well as thwarting all kinds of crime from
personal attacks of oneself or others and property crimes. Many people’s lives
have been saved by the use of a firearm and I want this to be known to balance
the bias that is given by the mainstream press.
Please
send in your personal stories and links to stories in your local press. Please
share this blog with others so that the word of responsible good citizens with
guns can be told instead of being hidden by the deluged of biased reporting
that pretends that Americans and others defending themselves and others is not
the most common use of a firearm by a good person. The people of the press
biased against Americans being able to have the most effective tool against
evil make constant attempts to deceive people into believing that defending
oneself and others with a firearm is in itself dangerous when most times it is
the only reasonable choice to thwart the criminal.
One of my
motivations for writing this and publishing this blog is the fact that I
believe I would not be alive today had it not been for the fact that I had a
firearm to defend myself.
In the
late 1970's I was attacked by two individuals with a firearm who were trying to
rob me and kill me. It was a normal day and I was taking some time off of work
to do a little fishing at the local municipal lake. I was fishing on a remote
section of the lake and had parked my car along the adjacent highway to where I
was fishing. As I was fishing a car pulled into a service road that followed the
lake but there was a chain blocking the road to non-official vehicles. Three
people got out of the car, two young me and a woman and walked down the dirt
service road. They returned within 5 minutes and I heard the car drive off. A
few minutes later the two men came near to where I was fishing and were acting
suspiciously. They asked if that was my car parked along the highway and I said
that it was. They commented on how they liked my car they asked me if the water
was deep where I was fishing and I said that it was but that I was only
catching a few small bream. They continued to hang around and I had a strong
feeling that they were going to threaten me so I packed my fishing gear up and
started to leave and go to my car which at the time was a 1976 Bill Blass
special edition Lincoln Continental.
Just after
I turned to walk away from them down the road towards my car they called out to
me and when I turned around there was a revolver pointing at me. I was only
about 12 feet away from them and I noticed that the revolver was a cheap
.22 that was obviously not very accurate
but we were very close. I decided to take my chance and run away for my car
thinking that there was a chance that the gun was not loaded or that they would
not use it. I was wrong. They shot at me several times and they missed.
I got to
my car and managed to open the driver’s door. I had a Luger 9mm Artillery model
pistol in a zippered case in the car under the driver’s seat and it had slid
into the floorboard behind the driver’s seat. I reached down to pick it up,
unzipped it and cycled a round into the chamber as I heard them shoot again
less than 5 feet from me. I did not even have time to turn around but just shot
my gun over my shoulder in their direction. I missed them but they took off
running and my life was saved. I called the police and of course they were
never apprehended.
